Yesterday Rio de Janeiro won the bid to host the Olympic games in 2016. This was a huge triumph for the city as they were against wealthier cities such as Tokyo, Chicago and Madrid, places that have hosted many large events before so have the capacity and know-how to do so. Never before has a Latin American country been host of the Olympics until now.

The victory of Rio shows a big promise into the future. Rio has a lot of work ahead to prepare for the Olympics but this shows that these games are much more than just that. The international competitions brings about change, unity and progress.
